Leadership can be defined as the social process influence process where a person can enlist the support and the help to the other people accomplishing a common task. I can further define leadership as the process of organizing and motivating people in order to achieve a common goal (Fehr, Kai & Dang, 2015). However, there have been some theories that have been developed involving situational interactions, traits, power, vision, values, function, charisma, behavior, and intelligence. The traits of a leader are some of the characteristics of a leader that has been persisting in many theories trying to describe a leader. According to the trait theory concerning leadership, leadership is usually rooted in the features possessed by certain people.

Studies have shown that people where leaders in certain situations it is not a must to be

leaders in other circumstances. Therefore, leadership cannot be characterized, as a continuing trait of an individual as situational approaches have shown that people can be effective in leadership in certain situations but not in other situations. The focus on the characteristics of a leader has shifted from the traits to the behavior of the leader in assessing the effectiveness of leadership in different situations.

Transformational and transactional theories The transactional theories of leadership entails the exchange of labor of the employees for rewards while transformational leadership theories involves the employees’ concerns in organizations, provision of vision of a group and intellectual stimulation among group members.

A transactional leader has the powers of performing certain tasks where he can reward

employees and punish others depending on the performance of the team. This enables the leader in accomplishing the predetermined objectives in exchange for something with the group members. In addition, the leader has the powers of evaluating, correcting and training the subordinates when the level of productivity is not up to the desired levels where effectiveness of reward system is assured in the process of reaching to the expected outcome.

Leadership styles

Many leaders in the process of leading their group in different situations have exercised

various leadership styles. This involves style selected by the leader in the process of directing, implementing plans and motivating the people being led. It is because of the personality,philosophy and experience of the leader. The leadership styles used depend mainly on the situation present in the process of leading people. For instance, at times of emergence there is usually little time available for agreements thus autocratic leadership style can be applicable is such situations. The style-adapted in the process of leadership is should be effective enough to achieve the organizational goals.

Autocratic leadership

This type of leadership style has the decision-making powers are usually centralized to the leaders, as it is in the case of dictators. Leaders cannot encourage any initiative of suggestion from the members hence only providing motivation to the manager. This facilitates fast decision-making process as the employees are not involved in the decision making process.

Democratic leadership

This leadership style involves sharing the decision-making responsibilities of the member of the group by ensuring the consideration of members’ interest. This ensures that social equality is practiced; hence, promoting the interest of the group members (Shin, Sung, Choi, & Kim, 2015).


This type of leadership is the most appropriate for me considering my personal traits in

leadership.

My leadership development plans

In the process of perfecting my leadership skills, I have come up with a plan that can assist me in developing my leadership skills. In order to achieve my leadership development plan I have decided to find the best practices that can be of assistance to the development of my leadership goals. I have developed 12 leadership practices, which I will be working on them for the next one year where each practice will be allocated one month and within one year, I will have been through with my leadership plan practices. The practices for improving my leadership skills can include the following:


Strategic thinking: this involves improving my ability to have a big picture while taking a

broader and long range of the leadership perspective. In addition, it entails learning to step back from the daily tactical details of my leadership roles and focus on better ways of going about leadership perspective.

Listening: learning to be paying attention and demonstrating to others that they are valued and their contributions are welcomed. Using active listening skills, body language and eliminating destructions when listening can be essential in improving my listening ability.

Couching: I will be shifting my leadership style, away from telling and directing; thus, learning to direct and guide my direct reports. In addition, I will ensure I work with direct reports to ensure the creation of their individual development plans.

Financial acumen: this will be involving the understanding, interpreting, and the use of the numbers in the process of improving my leadership performance.


Cross-functional perspective and knowledge: I will be trying to learn more about the other aspects of leadership other than my functional silo.

Industry and competitive knowledge: improving my knowledge about the market competition and the industry can be essential in ensuring proper leadership in the organization. This is important in leading the employees on getting closer to the customers and finding out on what need to be offered in the industry.

Leadership presence: entails improving my ability to communicate in a ways that is authentic; hence, inspiring many people in the industry. This can be important when am trying to nurture the talents of the employees in an organization through creating a supportive environment for the employees to nurture their talents.

Change leadership: I will try to nurture my skills in adapting change aiming at becoming a

catalyst to change, thus a champion to change. This can involve learning how to sustain and implement change in my organization.

Remote management: improving my ability in managing my remote reports and organization can be essential in developing my leadership aspects. This entails making better use of technology in my operations through planning, communicating and collaborating virtually.

Collaboration: collaborating with my pees can be of great benefits in improving the relationship I have with my peers. This can be essential for making me a better partner; thus, understanding their needs and goals hence learning on how work together aiming at achieving our goals.

Talent management: this can be entailing the improvement of my ability for assessing, hiring, promoting and developing employees. This can be essential in filling the positions with the best players thus replacing the chronic underperformers. Therefore, I will be developing virtual bench for the key positions and my succession plan for my position.

Time management: I will be ensuring that I improve many time management skills and assess the areas I might be wasting time. This can involve focusing on the activities that can be adding value by learning ways of working in ways, which are effective and efficient.

The goals are the areas I will be taking constant attention aiming at ensuring that I achieve them within the stipulated duration. I am hoping by the end of one year, I will have accomplished all the above goals within one year. After accomplishing my goals as they are in my leadership development plan, I will be a more effective, collaborative and well-rounded leader. This is the kind of a leader, that I have been striving to become and I will ensure u become that leaders I having been striving to become through proper utilization of the leadership practices. I was once asked to give an example of a leader and gave the justification as to why I believed he or she was a good leader. According to my notes, my choice for the leader was Pope John Paul II, as I believed he was collaborative, intelligent, and inspirational where he could inspire many people to believe in his vision. I strongly believe that the pope is an excellent leader and I am planning to model many of his qualities of leadership. Working on these leadership goals, I will be able to become an effective leader both professionally and personally in future.


The expected outcome of the leadership development goals

Improved interpersonal skills: The development plan for my leadership skills is expected to result in excellent interpersonal skills where I will be able to ensure colleagues and employees are comfortable. This can increase the interaction that can lead to the creation of conducive working environment (Pearce, Wassenaar, & Manz, 2014). This can entail inviting opinions from the employees thus making the employees feel value and respected hence most likely to increase the employees productivity.


Increase my knowledge: I expect the accomplishment of the leadership development plan to increase my leadership knowledge through the improvement of my leadership skills. This can be boosted by continuous improvement of the available skills using mentors as the guide for the improvement of the leadership skills.

Inspiring others: In addition, the development plan will ensure that I am in a position to be

inspirational to the team members. This can involve setting performance standards, which are high for an individual hence getting the team members out of the comfort zones. However, ensuring that the hard working members of the team can essential in making the members feel appreciated for their good performance.


Conclusion

An excellent leader is expected to be taking any opportunity for learning in the process of sharpening the leadership skills. In addition, a successful leader is expected to be willing and open to change thus growing as both an individual and an authority figure. It is considered essential for ensuring continuous improvement of the leadership skills for ensuring the skills are aligned with the changing priorities and goals (Waldman, & Balven, 2015). As an exemplary leader, I will ensure I collaborate with followers in the process of achieving the goals of the organization. The mutual relationship the followers and the leader is essential for effective leadership.
